The Earth From Space

This picture is an accurate representation of what the earth looks like from space. It shows an animation of the last 16 hours of global cloud cover and current position of sunlight on the earth. The NerdWorld Organisation's headquarters are at the exact center of the picture in southeastern Pennsylvania. (See the small colored circle in the center.) The picture is composed of 2 elements: 1) a composite image of the earth from space (without clouds); and 2) an animated image of worldwide cloud cover assembled from a composite of the world's weather satellites. The cloud images are updated approximately every hour, while the position of the sun is updated every 15 minutes. This page will automatically reload every 15 minutes with the new image(s).

This all means that this picture shows a pretty good "near real-time" view of what the world looks like if you were sitting directly above the NerdWorld headquarters in West Grove, PA, at an altitude of a few thousand kilometers. Feel free to bookmark this page and keep this page active on your desktop. It makes a nice background. The program which creates this image is called "xplanet" and is an "open source" program which can be freely downloaded from the xplanet home page.

Incidentally, the odd looking area at the north pole is due to the lack of weather satellite coverage of this area of our planet.  The cloud image therefore "fills in" this area with some garbage.  Sorry.
